From rural France to the Costa Rican rainforest, these luxury treehouses are the stuff dreams are made of. Each combines back-to-nature wonder with plenty of life’s little luxuries. Forget roughing it under canvas, it’s time to get high…
Tree House Lodge, Caribbean Coast, Costa Rica
Set in the jungle near Costa Rica’s pretty Punta Uva beach, Tree House Lodge’s 5 unique, eco-aware houses enjoy uninterrupted views of botanical gardens. All are constructed entirely from sustainably sourced wood, but one is built on tall stilts and submerged by the forest, with a steep wooden walkway to its front door. Inside, this back-to-your-childhood abode has hand-carved furniture and a fabulous bathroom: a 100-year-old Banyan tree shelters a toilet in one trunk fold and an outdoor shower in another.
Tranquil, Kerala, India
Hidden in the unspoilt hills of northern Kerala, authentic plantation homestay Tranquil has 2 rather surprising guest quarters. The first, Tree House, was created 35ft high in the branches of 3 trees and is approached by an easy inclined gangway. The second is Tree Villa, a vast space standing on stilts amongst the leaves. Both have large terraces with stunning views of the surrounding coffee and vanilla plantations. Back at ground level, there’s a beautiful pool and a garden with scented flowers and hammocks.
Lion Sands Ivory Lodge, Kruger, South Africa
As part of your South African safari adventure, spend a night in one of Ivory Lodge’s 3 luxurious treehouses. One is high in a jackalberry, another overlooks the river, and the third is in an ancient leadwood tree. You’ll be driven out from the lodge after dinner and left to commune with the extraordinary sounds of the African bush at night. You’ll get a double bed with a mattress and linen, a mosquito net and a viewing deck with chairs and gowns and slippers.
La Gree des Landes, Brittany, France
Picture an eco-friendly spa hotel in the wild meadows of Brittany, with superb organic food, tempting treatments and sweeping views – where better to enjoy a French treehouse escape? La Gree des Landes’ stilted wooden cabin sits in the branches a short walk from the main building, its veranda peeking over the treetops. The secluded setting makes it perfect for romantics. When you’re not nesting in your hideaway, you can wallow in the relaxation pool, sip cocktails in the candlelit bar and sample inventive fare in the restaurant. Talk about the best of both worlds…
La Sultana Oualidia, Atlantic Coast, Morocco
At the secluded edge of Oualidia’s mesmerising lagoon, La Sultana offers an exclusive and pampering Moroccan beachside experience. The thatched roof of the restaurant and spa give it a distinct South-Sea-island look, but the most remarkable feature is its decked infinity pool (ringed with Jacuzzis, loungers and daybeds), whose waters seem to merge with those of the lagoon. Just a short stroll from the main building, the chic wooden Treehouse Suite is built around an existing tree, grabbing panoramic views. Tempting honeymooners from the world over, it’s perfect for some peaceful birdwatching – so look out for avocets, warblers and godwits.
