Discover a trio of blissful boltholes on this Three Peaks adventure with a luxury twist.
The Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales in 24 hours. That tots up to 23 miles of walking, with a total ascent of 3064m. Yikes! Rather than racing and missing the views, why not stop off at some delightful little hotels to rejuvenate after each hike? Thankfully, we know of some boutique properties close to each peak, where you can put your feet up, drink in the scenery, perhaps treat yourself to a massage, and sink into a peaceful slumber before the next hike begins. After all, slow and steady wins the race.
Scottish Highlands
Once you’ve descended the soaring slopes of Ben Nevis (the highest of the three peaks), head for some R&R at Monachyle Mhor, a gourmet refuge at the gateway to the Highlands. Renowned for his award-winning cuisine, chef Tom will rustle up mouthwatering dishes from local produce. Replenish your energy levels with sustainably caught fish, meat from the on-site farm or seasonal greens from the veg plot. Then, retreat to your room in the old stone farmhouse for a restorative night’s sleep.
Lake District National Park
Part two of the Three Peaks Challenge is Scafell Pike, England’s tallest mountain but the lowest of the National Three Peaks. Upon completing the climb, reward yourself with a stay at The Boathouse at Knotts End, a 19-century stone house perching on a secluded lakeshore. Few places are more private than this: you’ll have no neighbours, hear no cars and pick up no internet connection. It’s just you and uninterrupted views to the fells. Unwind with a drink on the sunny balcony, or ensconce yourself in the plump armchair next to the wood-burning stove.
Snowdonia National Park
After navigating the ridges of Snowdon (supposedly the least demanding of the three climbs), head south to the small market town of Dolgellau, to stay at Ffynnon Townhouse. Run by husband-and-wife team Angela and Bernhard, this friendly hideaway is the home-from-home you’ll crave. Toast the end of the challenge with a glass of bubbly at the honesty bar, tuck into a well-deserved dinner at the intimate restaurant – where all dishes are lovingly prepared by husband Bernhard – then snuggle by the fire with a book. Oh, and did we mention there’s an outdoor hot tub? Just what the doctor ordered to soothe those sore muscles.
