We’re big fans of the Balearic islands, and we love the variety of holiday types they offer. We’ve already extolled their qualities for great family holidays and shared our favourite beach spots. Now we want to show you their romantic side, with our pick of the best places to stay for just the two of you.
Ibiza
Es Cucons, Santa Agnes de Corona
Vibe: A cosy, colourful hotel in a lush valley – you’d never guess it’s only 7km from lively San Antoni. This historic finca has been carefully restored into a romantic haven by its kind and welcoming owners. Firepits and candles are lit at night, and the honeymoon suite has an alfresco hot tub.
Rooms: Each room is decadently furnished: think sink-into sofas, fringed cushions, wooden antique furniture and chandeliers. All have their own outdoor space for lazing in the sunshine, and bigger rooms have majestic claw-foot tubs.
Food: Dinners are served in the atmospheric dining room or outside on the pretty terraces. We feasted on salt-encrusted seabass served with aioli and green beans, accompanied by perfectly matched wines. The buffet-style breakfast will set you up for the day nicely.
Day trips: This is stunning walking country and there are great trails starting right from the door.
Special treats: A dinner for 2 in the restaurant for stays of 4 nights or longer.
If this doesn’t quite float your boat, Can Curreu in the northeast offers decadence in spades. It has stylish rooms plus a fantastic restaurant that’s popular the island over, and you’ll get champagne and fresh flowers as a thank you for booking through i-escape.
Menorca
Torralbenc, Cala en Porter
Vibe: A special rural retreat on the Balearics’ sleepiest island. You’ll spot attention to detail in every corner, from the idyllic infinity pool lined with sleek sunbeds, to fresh flowers in the light-filled rooms. The hotel’s signature fragrance of lavender and rosemary follows you from gardens to bedrooms to bathrooms.
Rooms: White walls, sandstone and natural wood combine to make bright and airy rooms. The real showstoppers have long sea views, and we loved the Garden Cottage, where you can tuck yourselves away in your own private garden.
Food: The whole restaurant experience is out of this world. Let the team guide you through the menu and drink in (literally) the sommelier’s recommendations. Melt-in-the-mouth lamb sourced from Torralbenc’s own flock was our highlight.
Day trips: If you can drag yourselves away from the elegant pool, the pretty seaside village of Cala en Porter is a short drive away. Here, you can sun yourselves by day and while away the evening at the famous Cova d’en Xoroi cliffside bar.
Special treats: A welcome drink when you arrive as a thank you for booking through i-escape.
Also check out Jardi de ses Bruixes – a sophisticated townhouse in the heart of Menorca’s capital, Mahón. The rooms vary in size and style, but all have freestanding tubs; we loved them all. The hotel is a hub for arts and cultural events, so be sure to find out what’s on during your stay.
Mallorca
Son Viscos, Valldemossa
Vibe: A cool B&B in the majestic Tramuntana Mountains. The stone façade looks unassuming, but inside you’ll find great design and superb hospitality. Outside, the pretty terraced gardens have stunning views and ancient water channels for a relaxing dip.
Rooms: The stylish white rooms are accessorised with reclaimed furniture and accented with bright pops of colour in rugs and textiles. We loved the quirky surprises like a pretty old rocking horse. They’re spread over 3 floors, with those at the top tucked into the eaves.
Food: Breakfast is laid out on the kitchen table, and you can pick and choose from meats, cheeses, little pastries, fresh juice, eggs, nuts, fruit and yoghurt. Owner Michael can recommend nearby restaurants for other meals.
Day trips: Head out on a mountain walk, or take a day trip to Palma to wander the streets of its atmospheric old town.
Special treats: A bottle of wine during your stay as a thank you for booking through i-escape.
Also look at Font Santa, an adults-only haven near Es Trenc, Mallorca’s most famous beach. It’s not cheap but everything is top-notch, and entry to the spa’s thermal circuit is included in the rate.
