Craving a break from technology? These boutique ‘off-grid’ cabins and guesthouses are the picture-perfect spot for a relaxing (and indulgent) digital detox.

Stop alarm, check emails, play music, skim news, scroll Instagram, reply to texts, pay for coffee, order groceries, book dinner… From the moment we pull ourselves out of bed, to the moment our heads hit the pillow again, technology has become the fine thread weaving together the tapestry of our daily lives. We’ve come to rely on it so much so that it can be difficult to get away from a screen – or resist the temptation – even when we want to.

Enter the newest rising trend in travel: ‘unplugged’ or off-grid escapes. Places with little to no wifi, sometimes no electricity at all. Just you, the landscape, the books you brought and the people you’re with.

Here are a few of our favourite stays for a digital detox that is sure to cure burnout – from luxurious glamping in the UK to Mexican cabanas on the shores of Lake Bacalar. Because with everything going on in the world, we could all use a little escape.

1 StarBed Hideaways, Devon, United Kingdom

This glamping option is perfect for a romantic screen-free break. Tucked away in fields on a National Trust estate in the lush Tamar Valley (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the edge of Dartmoor) these 2 utterly romantic shepherd’s huts nestled in leafy coverage are the perfect base for a weekend of long walks and peaceful evenings in front of the fire. Set far apart from one another, each double oak-clad cabin is completely private, with spectacular views from their high-up vantage point down to historic Buckland Abbey. There’s no wifi or mains electricity, so bring a good book and get ready for a cosy, candlelit weekend for two.

2 Swinton Bivouac, Yorkshire, United Kingdom

Set in the 20,000-acre Swinton Park Estate, overlooking rolling meadows dotted with sheep, Swinton Bivouac is a unique eco-village for those looking to get lost in the Yorkshire Dales. Approached up a rough track, it centres on a restored farmhouse with a reception area and café, with canvas yurts and timber cabins (sleeping 2-7) scattered across the surrounding pastures and woodland. For adventurous families and groups of friends, it’s a slice of rural paradise, with plenty of hiking, cycling and wild swimming to do nearby. And with no telly or in-room wifi, it’s just fire pits and star-gazing after dark. What could be better?

Best for family getaways and outdoorsy friends

3 Instants d’Absolu Ecolodge, Auverne, France

This remote eco-lodge is a secluded haven of rustic luxury and tranquillity set against the most breathtaking wilderness. It’s at the edge of Lac du Pêcher in Auvergne, a secret pocket of France that few tourists hear about with pine woods and ancient volcanic plateaus all around. And it has no neighbours, no wifi, no TVs and limited phone signal. What it does have is an excellent spa, seasonal, farm-to-table food, and miles of ancient forest trails to explore by foot, bike or on horseback.

Best for adventurous couples and families with active teens

Prices from £254 per night

4 Onar, Andros, Greece

While it’s just a couple of hours from Athens, Andros is still very much a hidden gem, and so is Onar. This discreet cluster of stone houses (sleeping 2-5) in a secluded cove on the east coast of island (the northernmost in the Cyclades group) feels rugged, wild, and removed but never lonely thanks to your lovely hosts. Here, you have to pay extra for wifi, but on what feels like a private island with a stunning, secret beach just a stroll away, why would you? Feast on fresh, local food, lounge around the communal pool, or spend your days disconnecting on long walks and salty swims. The only burnout you’ll have when you leave is from the sun.

Best for escapes for families with young explorers

Prices from £224 per night

5 Berber Lodge, Atlas Mountains, Morocco

Just 45 minutes outside of Marrakech, on the outskirts of a quiet village in the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains, this cluster of adobe buildings is an unexpected but exquisite setting for a digital detox that will leave you feeling truly refreshed. There is wifi in the common areas, so disconnection isn’t totally forced here – but it is very much encouraged. The vibe at Berber Lodge is serene and thoughtful, the style impeccable, and most guests are immersed in a book, a board game, a friendly conversation with another traveller, or simply enjoying the sprawling garden around the pool. Order a pot of mint tea, and let the hours drift by, punctuated by delicious meals and distant brays from the resident donkey.

Best for romantic breaks for couples or new parents with babies

Prices from £270 per night

6 Pacuare Lodge, Siquirres, Costa Rica

If you’re looking for something truly ‘off-grid’ – Pacuare Lodge is deep in the rainforest and only reachable by raft. So as much as this eco-retreat is a tranquil escape, it’s also ideal for thrill seekers and explorers hunting for a different sort of holiday; one that combines adventure with excellent food, fine wines and blissful tranquility. Wake to a chorus of birdsong, feast on fresh fruit, embark on a jungle trek or book in at the spa; a veritable neverland for burnt-out adults. Wifi only reaches the reception area, and it’s limited at best; accommodation is comfortable but rustic, and without electricity, so you’ll be forced to appreciate the simpler things.

Best for adventurous holidays with groups of friends and active teens

Prices from $1046 per night, full board, transfer included

7 Azul Nomeolvides, Bacalar, Mexico

Deep in the thick jungle near the border with Belize, Lake Bacalar is like a vivid mirage, with glassy turquoise water lapping up onto densely forested banks full of foxes, monkeys, iguanas and tropical birds. Just visible amongst this verdant canopy, Azul Nomeolvides is exactly the sort of eco-friendly, off-grid bohemian enclave you’d hope to find. Reception is the only place you’ll find wifi, (but you won’t miss it) and sustainability is key. So if you’re looking to embrace the simpler things in a tropical, laid-back setting – this is the spot.

Best for romantic getaways and solo excursions

Prices from £170 per night, B&B

8 Ulpotha, Cultural Triangle, Sri Lanka

‘Paradise’ is the word guests most often use to describe this unique, mountain-ringed village in the heart of Sri Lanka, about 2 hours north west of Kandy. There are daily yoga classes, a range of treatments in their Ayurvedic centre, and nearby mountain trails for hiking and bird watching. It’s the most peaceful retreat for those looking for a full body and mind reset, and it’s also a great spot for solo travellers hoping to make friends. There is no wifi here, and no electricity in the rooms, so come prepared to disconnect with the outside world and reconnect with what matters most.

Best for solo journeys of self-discovery or yogi retreats

Prices from £170 per night for a space in a shared room, all inclusive
