Whether you want some space to rest and recharge away from the kids or just a tranquil romantic break, we’ve rounded up our favourite adults-only retreats in the UK.
Grove Lodge, Bath
Grove Lodge is a 3-suite Bath B&B offering everything you could want for: a warm welcome, sumptuous breakfasts and 5-star service. It’s a mile from the city centre but well worth the walk or bus ride. We slept soundly in our super-kingsize bed and woke to a magnificent breakfast served in our room. Our highlights were the Piedmontese waffles with Nutella, bananas and hazelnuts, and the Full English with herby potato cakes.
Gift: A free bottle of Prosecco and a lift from the train station on arrival (if required), as a thank you for booking through i-escape.
Top tip: Don’t leave Bath without trying one of the free 2-hour walking tours which leave regularly – and in all weathers – from outside The Pump Room, near the Abbey.
The Barn at Roundhurst, West Sussex
It is easy to unwind at this 17th-century barn-turned-hotel, nestled in the South Downs National Park. Occupying the outbuildings of a working farm, the 6 rustic-chic bedrooms are decorated with woollen throws and textured rugs. Fuelled by a hearty breakfast, there are miles of footpaths to explore from the door, and the promise of fine dining (Wednesday-Saturday) will help tempt those tired legs home.
Gift: Afternoon tea on arrival, as a thank you for booking through i-escape.
Top tip: Much of the farm’s produce, including their organic meat, is available to buy. Order during your stay and staff will have everything packed and ready for your departure.
Croft 103, Sutherland, Scotland
These 2 remote boltholes (each sleeping 2) sit in the wild beauty of northern Scotland, where loch meets mountain meets sky. They are set far apart for privacy, with outdoor clawfoot bathtubs and walls of glass windows to make the most of the vast views and star-filled skies. Inside, each has a bedroom with a huge 7-foot bed, a big ensuite Caithness stone bathroom (home to another clawfoot tub), and a Sonos sound system capable of playing in every room – so you can cook dinner to your chosen soundtrack.
Gift: A bottle of wine, as a thank you for booking through i-escape.
Top tip: Go for a dawn swim in the loch. It might seem unappealing (and early), but watching the first light of day creeping over the mountains from the peaceful waters will be unforgettable – you won’t regret it for a moment.
The Boathouse at Knotts End, Lake District
Perched on the western shores of Ullswater, this is the ultimate romantic getaway. There are no neighbours, no passing traffic and the only sounds you’ll hear are birdsong and lapping waters. Inside, this bijou boathouse has an open-plan layout with a small kitchen, a cosy seating area and a bright bedroom. A huge arched door leads out onto a terrace overlooking the lake – perfect for peaceful alfresco breakfasts. There are walking maps if you fancy exploring the beautiful Lake District, but we wouldn’t blame you for doing little more than relaxing and staring at that view…
Gift: A bottle of wine, as a thank you for booking through i-escape.
Top tip: Stay during the summer months (May-October) and you’ll get use of a rowing boat to explore the lake.
Trevose Harbour House, St Ives, Cornwall
If you’re after a deeply stylish seaside bolthole, look no further than this romantic 6-room St Ives B&B. Every little detail is perfect, from the contemporary-nautical colour scheme and carefully curated furniture, to the thick bathrobes, artisan biscuits and the nightly turn-down service. For more privacy, book the romantic 1-bedroom apartment down the road, which is decorated in a lovely sunny style. Best of all, it’s all set just a stone’s throw from the golden sands of Porthminster Beach, as well as St Ives’ fantastic restaurant scene.
Gift: A bottle of Prosecco during your stay, as a thank you for booking through i-escape.
Top tip: Book a bedroom at the front of the B&B for sweeping sea and harbour views.
