There’s always someone jetting off from i-escape HQ – usually to scout out new hip hideaways for our collection, or to check that existing ones still meet our exacting standards. But every so often someone goes exploring off our beaten path. The latest is Bookings Consultant Emylou, who’s shared her beautiful snaps from Japan with us. We all want to go now!
It is an undeniable fact that Japan is a calamity of contrasts; a seamless transition of East-meets-West and old-meets-new. Geishas use Snapchat, and the arrival of your 300 km/h bullet train is announced by the tinkling of old-fashioned music over the train-station speakers. In a world of ever-assimilating global cultures, Japan remains a rare stronghold of unapologetic individuality, and it’s hard not to be seduced by its confidence.
We started our adventure with a hike along a rural mountain pass in the Kiso Valley, bumbling through bamboo forests and dusty little villages. Our efforts were rewarded with a relaxing overnight stay in a traditional inn (or ryokan).
Speaking of contrasts, next was the hectic mega city of Tokyo. Maybe a bit OTT for my little Bristol-dwelling heart, but still an interesting experience!
Japanese food is vibrant, innovative and varied. Above all, it is executed with meticulous care and attention to detail. Most of it was excellent….
…. but some of it may have got a bit lost in translation!
Kyoto was our highlight – a relaxed but vivacious city filled with ancient beauty.
Overall, Japan is a great place to explore – just dive right in headfirst. Although you may find yourself standing out from the crowd, Japan will always be the star of its own show!
